Description
Antique, 19th century, possibly made in Russian Empire, Jewish Torah pointer “Yad.” Comprised of a shaft made of dark brown hardwood and a superbly made brass pointer hand. Silvered copper mountings adorned with filigree work of twisted wire and pearl-shaped knobs.
The middle mounting set with blue and red faceted jewels has a ring on the top where you can put a chain or strap to hang it on a wall when not in use.
The copper parts were silvered using an old mechanical technique; a thin silver foil was applied on the copper and heated with fire, which bonded two metals.
This silvering method dating back to antiquity was replaced by electroplating in the mid-19th century

CONDITION: Showing age and usage, silver coating slightly worn, pointing finger slightly bent. Free of repair or restoration.
